The assessment

What Zoho CRM is, honestly

Zoho CRM is priced in rand, carries functionality that competitors charge three times as much for, and is the pragmatic choice for most South African sales teams.

Zoho CRM is the value leader in this category and the gap is not small. Workflow automation, custom modules, territory management, forecasting and a scripting layer are all available at price points where Salesforce is still selling you the entry edition.

Crucially for a South African buyer, Zoho publishes rand pricing and bills in rand. That removes the exchange rate exposure that makes budgeting for Salesforce or HubSpot an annual argument with the finance director.

Capability

Everything a normal sales operation needs is here: pipeline and deal stages, quoting, email integration with both Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, activity tracking, forecasting and reporting. Above that sits a workflow engine that will handle approval chains, escalations and scheduled actions without code, and a scripting language for the cases that need it.

The mobile app is good enough for a rep working out of a car, including offline capture, which matters more than vendors admit in a country with patchy coverage between towns.

The honest weaknesses

The interface is dense. There is a lot of it, and a new user without training will find it overwhelming next to Pipedrive. Budget for proper onboarding rather than assuming the team will pick it up.

The upgrade path is also a known frustration. Features you assumed were included frequently sit one tier up, and the practical edition for a real sales team is usually Professional rather than Standard. Price the tier you will actually use.

POPIA

Consent handling is better than most. Zoho ships GDPR tooling that maps well onto POPIA requirements: consent capture on records, data subject request handling and configurable retention. Data residency can be selected by region.

Who should buy it

Most South African sales teams between three and a hundred users. If you already run Zoho Books, the case is close to automatic.

Quoting from the CRM removed a whole handoff

Six reps, eighteen months in, and the pipeline is the most accurate it has ever been. Consent and data subject tooling that maps onto POPIA. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. There are irritations, and none of them are the kind that make you look elsewhere. It is not perfect, and it is the right choice for us.

What works

Billed natively in rand, so the budget does not move with the exchange rate. Email sync captures conversations without anyone copying anything. Reporting answers the questions the sales meeting actually asks.

What does not

Onboarding a new rep takes longer than it should.

Reps update it without being nagged

We moved off a spreadsheet and the difference in forecast quality was immediate. Billed natively in rand, so the budget does not move with the exchange rate. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. Nothing has come up in the last year that I would call a real problem. If you are weighing it up, do the trial with your own data and you will see it.

What works

Consent and data subject tooling that maps onto POPIA. Email sync captures conversations without anyone copying anything. The pipeline view gives an honest picture of the month.

What does not

Billing in dollars makes the annual budget a moving target.

Good CRM, poor reporting for the price

It is capable. Getting the team to use it consistently took much longer than the software took to set up. Workflow automation competitors reserve for enterprise tiers. Beyond that it is more ordinary than the marketing suggests. It sits squarely in the middle for us, useful but not something I would champion. I would shortlist it, not necessarily pick it.

What works

Workflow automation competitors reserve for enterprise tiers. Setup was fast.

What does not

Reporting is limited without moving up a tier. There is no local accounting integration without Zapier.
