The assessment

What Salesforce Sales Cloud is, honestly

Salesforce is the most configurable CRM in existence and the right answer for complex sales organisations, provided you budget for the implementation as well as the licence.

Salesforce is the enterprise standard for a reason. Given enough configuration it will model any sales process you can describe, integrate with anything, and report on it in any shape a board asks for. There is no capability question. There is a cost question, and it has two parts.

Licence and implementation

The licence is billed per user per month in US dollars on an annual commitment. That is the visible number. The invisible number is implementation, and in South Africa a realistic Sales Cloud implementation through a local partner runs into six figures in rand for a mid sized business. The rule of thumb our reviewers keep repeating is that year one total cost is two to three times the licence.

Then there is the ongoing administration. A serious Salesforce deployment needs an administrator, either a person or a retained partner. Budgeting for the licence alone is the single most common mistake we see.

What you get

Complete configurability without code for most requirements, and a development platform for the rest. Territory and quota management that actually works at scale. Forecasting a CFO will trust. An ecosystem, AppExchange, that has an answer for almost any adjacent requirement. And a local partner community in Johannesburg and Cape Town with real depth.

What frustrates people

Complexity, consistently. Simple changes need an administrator. The interface has more of everything than most users need. New sales people take longer to become productive than on any other CRM in this list.

Costs also creep. Sandboxes, additional API calls, extra storage, premium support and each additional cloud all carry a price, and the renewal conversation is rarely a happy one.

Who should buy it

Organisations with genuinely complex sales processes, multiple business units, formal territory and quota structures, or an existing group standard. Businesses under about twenty users are almost always better served elsewhere.

Quoting from the CRM removed a whole handoff

Six reps, eighteen months in, and the pipeline is the most accurate it has ever been. The largest application ecosystem in business software. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. There are irritations, and none of them are the kind that make you look elsewhere. I would recommend it to a business of our size without hesitation.

What works

The largest application ecosystem in business software. The mobile app works well enough for a rep between meetings. Quoting from the record removed a handoff to admin.

What does not

The features we needed sat one tier above the one we were quoted.

Used for 6 to 12 months

The pipeline is finally accurate

We moved off a spreadsheet and the difference in forecast quality was immediate. Will model any sales process you can describe. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. Nothing has come up in the last year that I would call a real problem. It is not perfect, and it is the right choice for us.

What works

Deep local partner community in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Reporting answers the questions the sales meeting actually asks. The mobile app works well enough for a rep between meetings.

What does not

Billing in dollars makes the annual budget a moving target.

Used for less than 6 months

The features we bought it for were one tier up

Adoption failed and that is partly on us and partly on the product. Where it earns its keep is that the parts we were sold on never worked the way they were demonstrated. The gaps are the kind that create work rather than save it. It may suit a simpler business than ours.

What works

The free tier let us evaluate properly.

What does not

Adoption never happened and the vendor offered no help with it. The mobile app is unreliable on a weak signal. Costs rose sharply at renewal.
