VAT season stopped being a crisis

I run the books for three related companies and this is the first system that has kept up. A workflow engine competitors do not offer at any tier. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. Nothing has come up in the last year that I would call a real problem. Worth the migration effort, which is not something I say often.

What works

A free plan that is genuinely usable, not a demo. Bank feeds match transactions accurately and the rules learn quickly. Our accountant has their own login at no extra cost.

What does not

The interface has not aged well.

Does the compliance work without being asked

After two years I can say the reconciliation time saving is real and it is significant. Built in client portal at no extra cost. That is the part that genuinely changed how we work. There are irritations, and none of them are the kind that make you look elsewhere. Two years in and nobody has suggested we look at alternatives.

What works

The most functionality per rand in the category by a wide margin. Invoices go out looking professional with no design work. Multi currency handling is genuinely correct on unrealised gains.

What does not

Reporting beyond the standard pack still ends up in a spreadsheet.

Cheaper than the alternatives, and you find out why

The trial went well. Live use with real volume did not. What surprised me was that the parts we were sold on never worked the way they were demonstrated. The gaps are the kind that create work rather than save it. I would look elsewhere unless price is the only consideration.

Support responses were slow and generic. Bank feed failures went unresolved for weeks. The VAT handling required constant manual correction.

Works well once you accept its limits

We chose this on price and mostly that decision has held up. The most functionality per rand in the category by a wide margin. Beyond that it is more ordinary than the marketing suggests. It sits squarely in the middle for us, useful but not something I would champion. I would shortlist it, not necessarily pick it.
